Repair or replace your car? How to decide in Windham

Repair it when the fix costs less than the car is worth to you and the rest of the car is sound. Start looking at a replacement when big repairs keep stacking up, rust has reached the structure or brake lines, or one repair costs more than the car is worth.

Repair it when the fix costs less than the car is worth to you and the rest of the car is sound. Start looking at a replacement when big repairs keep stacking up, when rust has reached the structure or the brake lines, or when one repair costs more than the car is worth.

A rule of thumb only gets you so far. A real inspection tells you what you are actually facing.

Know what the car is worth

Look up your car's value on a pricing guide like Kelley Blue Book, using its real mileage and condition. Compare that to the repair estimate. A repair that costs a large share of the car's value deserves a hard look. A repair that keeps a sound car running for years usually does not.

Ask what else is coming due

One repair is rarely the whole story. Ask what else the car will need in the next year: tires, brakes, a timing belt if your owner's manual calls for one, or suspension parts worn by frost heaves. Add those to the repair and compare the total.

Rust decides more cars in Maine than engines do

Road salt eats steel from the bottom up. Surface rust on heavy parts is normal here. Rust that has eaten through the frame, subframe, rocker panels or brake lines is different, because it affects safety and keeps getting worse. If the structure is going, a big engine repair rarely makes sense.

Count the real cost of replacing

A replacement is more than a sticker price. Maine sales tax, registration and title fees come on top, plus any financing cost. Compare that full number against the repair, not just the vehicle price.

How we help you decide

We put the car on a lift and tell you what needs work now and what can wait, and you know the cost before we turn a wrench. If a repair costs more than the car is worth, we can talk about a trade-in on the spot, because we buy cars as well as fix them.

If the car will not drive, our own flatbed tow truck can bring it straight to our bays at 619 Roosevelt Trail.

Not sure whether to fix it?

Bring it in and we will give you a straight look at what it needs and what it is worth.
