What fails a Maine inspection in Cumberland County?
Most failures come down to a handful of things you can check yourself: a lit check engine light, worn brakes or tires, burned out lights, wipers and windshield problems, exhaust leaks, and rust on the frame or brake lines.

In Cumberland County, most inspection failures come down to a short list: a lit check engine light, worn brakes or tires, burned out lights, wiper and windshield problems, exhaust leaks, and rust on the frame or brake lines. Most of these you can spot yourself before inspection day.
Maine requires most registered vehicles to pass a safety inspection every year at an official inspection station licensed by the Maine State Police. Windham is in Cumberland County, the only county in Maine that adds an emissions check to the annual inspection.
Why does a check engine light matter more here?
Because Cumberland County inspections include an emissions check. For most gasoline vehicles that means reading the on-board diagnostics system to confirm the engine and emissions equipment are reporting correctly. A lit check engine light is one of the most common reasons a vehicle fails that part.
If your light is on, have it diagnosed before inspection day rather than after. The code tells us which system reported a fault, and testing tells us why.
What safety items get checked?
The safety side follows the Maine State Police inspection standards. Inspectors look at brakes, tires, steering and suspension, lights and signals, the exhaust system, the windshield and wipers, the horn and mirrors, and seat belts.
They also look at rust on the frame, body and brake lines. In Maine, that is where a lot of older vehicles run into trouble, because road salt works on the underside all winter.
What can I check myself before inspection day?
Walk around the car with a helper and test every light: headlights on low and high beam, brake lights, turn signals and the license plate light. A burned out bulb is a cheap fix before inspection and an annoying reason to fail.
Check that the wipers clear the glass without streaking and that the washer fluid sprays. Look for cracks in the windshield in front of the driver. Press the horn, buckle every seat belt, and look at the tire tread for uneven or very low spots.
Listen for grinding or squealing when you brake, and for a louder than usual exhaust. Both are worth a look before the inspector hears them.
What happens if my car fails?
We show you exactly what failed and why, in plain words, and give you the price to fix it before anything is touched. Because we are a full repair shop, most failed items can be repaired in the same bays by the same people who inspected the car. You decide who does the repair.
