Oil Changes in Windham, ME
M & Son changes oil for all makes and models at 619 Roosevelt Trail on Route 302 in Windham, Maine. A regular oil change protects your engine and helps your car last through Maine winters. We drain the old oil, replace the filter, and top off fluids. Call the shop to book.
An oil change is the cheapest thing you will ever do for an engine, and the easiest one to let slide. Motor oil does more than lubricate. It carries heat away from moving parts, holds combustion byproducts in suspension so they do not settle as sludge, and keeps a film between metal surfaces that would otherwise wear against each other. Oil does that job less and less well as it ages, and the decline is invisible from the driver seat until something expensive announces it.
We do conventional and full-synthetic changes on all makes and models, replace the filter every time, top off the fluids we can reach, and reset the service light before you leave. Conventional oil is refined from crude and does the job perfectly well in many engines. Full-synthetic oil is engineered in a lab so its molecules are more uniform, which means it flows better when cold, resists breaking down under heat, and generally holds up longer between changes. Some engines require synthetic, some simply do better on it, and some are entirely happy on conventional. We will tell you which category your vehicle falls into rather than upselling by default.
How often you need a change depends far more on how you drive than on the calendar. Owners manuals list an interval, and that interval usually assumes moderate conditions. The driving most people do around Windham is the opposite of moderate: short trips to North Windham and back, cold starts through a long winter, idling in traffic on Route 302 in summer, and towing or loaded trips out toward Sebago. Short cold trips are the hardest of all, because the engine never fully warms and moisture and fuel dilution stay in the oil instead of burning off. If most of your miles look like that, stay at the shorter end of the range your manufacturer gives rather than the longer end.
What we will not do is invent a number and call it a rule. Your manual is the authority on your engine, and we will read it with you. Bring the manual, or just the year, make and model, and we will tell you what the manufacturer calls for and what we would honestly suggest given how you actually drive.
While the car is on the lift we look at what is easy to see: belts and hoses, coolant and brake fluid levels, tire wear and tread depth, and anything obviously leaking or loose. If something needs attention we tell you what it is, how urgent it really is, and what it would cost, so you can decide. If nothing needs attention, we say that too, which is the part people seem least used to hearing.
Driving around Windham makes this more important than the odometer suggests. Short errand trips along Route 302 through North Windham often end before the engine is fully warm, and cold Maine mornings add more cold starts per mile. Moisture and fuel collect in the oil when it never gets hot enough to burn them off. Many owner's manuals list those conditions under a severe service schedule with shorter intervals. If that sounds like your driving, ask us which schedule fits your car.

Common questions
- How often should I change my oil in Maine?
- Follow the interval in your owners manual, and lean toward the shorter end of it if most of your driving is short winter trips. Cold starts and stop-and-go miles age oil faster than steady highway driving does. Bring the manual, or the year, make and model, and we will tell you what yours calls for.
- Do you do synthetic oil changes?
- Yes. We do both full-synthetic and conventional changes. If your manufacturer requires synthetic we use synthetic. If it is optional we will tell you the tradeoff and let you pick rather than deciding for you.
- How long does an oil change take?
- An oil change is one of the quicker jobs in the shop, but the honest answer depends on the day and what else is in the bays. Call the shop and we will tell you what the wait looks like before you drive over.
- Do I need an appointment for an oil change in Windham?
- Call first. We are a small shop, so a quick call tells you whether to come straight down Route 302 or whether a later slot suits both of us better.
- What else do you check during an oil change?
- While the vehicle is up we look over belts and hoses, coolant and brake fluid levels, tire wear and tread depth, and anything visibly leaking or loose. You get told what we found, urgent or not.
- Do you change oil for cars I did not buy from you?
- Yes. The service side is open to every driver, all makes and models, whether or not the vehicle came from our lot.
