Engine Diagnostics in Windham, ME
M & Son runs engine diagnostics on all makes and models at 619 Roosevelt Trail on Route 302 in Windham, Maine. We connect a scan tool to read the codes behind your check engine light, then test to find the real cause of the fault or drivability problem. Call the shop.
A check engine light means your vehicle noticed something outside the range it expects and logged it. That is all it means on its own. It is not a measure of how serious the problem is, which is why the same amber light can sit above a loose fuel cap and above a misfire that is slowly destroying a catalytic converter. The light is the car raising its hand, not the car explaining itself.
Every car sold in the United States since 1996 carries OBD-II, which stands for On-Board Diagnostics, second generation. It is the standardized system of sensors and software that monitors the engine and emissions equipment, and the standard port under the dash where a scan tool plugs in. When something falls outside spec, the system stores a trouble code and, in most cases, turns on the light. That standardization is why any competent shop can talk to any vehicle, and it is genuinely useful. It is also frequently oversold.
A code is a starting point rather than a final answer. Codes name the circuit or the system that reported the fault, not the part that failed. A code pointing at an oxygen sensor might be a failed sensor, or an exhaust leak upstream of it, a vacuum leak changing the mixture, a fuel delivery problem, or wiring that has corroded through a Maine winter. Replacing the part the code names is guessing with your money. The free code read at a parts counter tells you which conversation to have. It does not end the conversation.
So diagnosis is the work that happens after the code. We look at live data while the engine runs, check fuel trims, test the circuit rather than assume it, look for the leaks and the chafed wiring and the corroded connector, and reproduce the symptom where we can. Then you get it in plain words: what the vehicle is doing, what is causing it, what it costs to fix, and what happens if you wait. You decide with that in front of you.
Common causes we see run from the trivial to the serious: a loose or failed fuel cap, worn spark plugs or coils causing a misfire, an oxygen or mass airflow sensor genuinely at end of life, vacuum leaks from aged hoses, evaporative emissions leaks, thermostats stuck open, and catalytic converters that failed because a misfire went ignored. Drivability complaints without any light count too. Rough idle, hard starting on cold mornings, stalling, hesitation on acceleration and fuel economy that dropped off a cliff are all worth a call even with no warning on the dash.
One rule matters more than the rest. If your light is flashing rather than steady, stop driving and call. A flashing light generally signals an active misfire dumping raw fuel into the exhaust, and every mile turns a spark plug job into a converter job.

Common questions
- Why is my check engine light on?
- Because the vehicle logged a fault somewhere in the engine or emissions system. The cause ranges from a loose fuel cap to a misfire, and the light itself does not distinguish between them. Reading the code tells us which system reported it, and testing tells us why.
- Do you read engine codes in Windham?
- Yes. We read codes on all makes and models at 619 Roosevelt Trail, and then we do the testing that tells us what the code actually means before anyone buys a part.
- Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
- A steady light usually means you can drive carefully to the shop, but get it looked at soon. A flashing light means stop driving and call the shop, because it generally signals an active misfire that damages expensive parts with every mile.
- What does an engine diagnostic include?
- We connect a scan tool and pull the stored codes, review live sensor data while the engine runs, test the circuits and components the codes point at, look for leaks and wiring damage, and reproduce the symptom where we can. Then you get the cause and the price.
- Can you fix the problem after diagnosing it?
- Yes, in the great majority of cases we repair what we diagnose, in the same shop. You get the price before the work starts, and if a job falls outside what we take on we will tell you straight rather than tie your vehicle up.
- Who works on my car at M & Son?
- Our own shop technicians, in our bays on Route 302, working on all makes and models. Call the shop and you are talking to the shop directly rather than to a call center.
